FAQs
What happens in a first appointment?
Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and discuss what has brought you to therapy. We’ll explore your current concerns, relevant background, and what you hope to achieve.
If you’re considering EMDR, we’ll also discuss whether it may be an appropriate approach for your circumstances. There is no pressure to begin EMDR immediately- our first priority is ensuring you feel safe, comfortable, and supported.
What is the cost of a session?
I offer 50-minute in-person and online sessions, at a rate of £70.
The first step is a free 20-minute video consultation where we can discuss your needs and how we might work together.
How do I know whether I need Person-Centred Counselling or EMDR?
You don’t need to decide before getting in touch.
During our initial sessions, we’ll explore your needs, goals and experiences together. Some people benefit from Person-Centred Counselling on its own, while others may find that EMDR is appropriate. In many cases, the two approaches work well together, with the therapeutic relationship providing a strong foundation before introducing EMDR where beneficial.
What is the difference between Person-Centred Counselling and EMDR?
Person-Centred Counselling is a non-directive talking therapy that provides a safe, accepting space to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences. It is based on the belief that you have the capacity to better understand yourself and find your own way forward.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process distressing memories and experiences that may still be affecting you today. Rather than replacing counselling, EMDR can complement it where appropriate.
Can I have both Person-Centred Counselling and EMDR?
Yes. Many clients benefit from a combination of the two approaches.
Person-Centred Counselling provides a safe, trusting therapeutic relationship where you can explore your experiences without judgement. As our work develops, EMDR can be introduced where appropriate to help process distressing memories, emotional blocks or deeply held beliefs that may be affecting your life today.
Because therapy is tailored to you, we can decide together whether talking therapy, EMDR, or a combination of both best supports your goals.

Is EMDR only for trauma or PTSD?
No. While EMDR is widely recognised as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD, it can also be helpful for anxiety, low self-esteem, phobias, grief, distressing life experiences and persistent negative beliefs. Sometimes it isn’t one major event that affects us, but a series of smaller experiences that continue to influence how we feel and respond today.
Will EMDR make me relive painful memories?
EMDR involves recalling aspects of difficult experiences, but its purpose is to help those memories become less emotionally overwhelming – not to retraumatise you.
Throughout the process, your wellbeing remains the priority, and we only begin EMDR when appropriate preparation has taken place.
What age groups do you work with?
I work with adults over the age of 18.
How many sessions will I need?
There isn’t a fixed number of sessions because every person and every situation is different.
Some people seek support for a specific issue, while others choose longer-term therapy to explore broader patterns or experiences. We’ll regularly review how things are progressing and work together to decide what feels right for you.
Is it confidential?
Yes, everything discussed during counselling sessions is confidential, except in rare circumstances where there may be a risk to your safety or others’ safety, in line with the BACP ethical framework.
Can I have online counselling?
Yes, I offer both face-to-face and online sessions, providing flexibility to suit your preferences and schedule.
What if I'm nervous about starting therapy?
Feeling nervous is completely understandable. Taking the first step can feel daunting, particularly if you’ve never been to therapy before. My aim is to provide a warm, welcoming and non-judgemental space where you can move at a pace that feels comfortable for you. There is no expectation to share everything immediately, and we’ll work together to build a therapeutic relationship that feels safe and supportive.
Can I cancel a session?
If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice, or missed appointments without prior notification, will be charged at the full session rate of £70.
